Wang Yuyan
In Chinese: 王语嫣.
Young woman with a slim build and hair that reached down her back; appeared to have a misty aura about her, as if she was not of this world. Duan Yu found the sound of her sighing so sweet that his heart began beating wildly, even before he saw her. Her voice caused his blood to rise up within him; spoke as if Murong Fu required pointers from her in martial arts. Considered by Duan Yu to possess a voice that was akin to the music of fairies and gentler than a melody blown on the vertical flute. Asked the maidservant Xiaoming for news about Murong Fu; sounded as if she cared deeply about him (Chapter 12).
Looked exactly like the White Jade Statue in the Boundless Cavern, as if the statue itself had come to life. Thought Duan Yu was a madman when he bowed before her and called her 'teacher'. On closer look, appeared to have a hint of childishness amidst her prim and proper demeanour; seemed to be less lively than the White Jade Statue. Daughter of Mrs Wang. Had never heard anyone saying that she was beautiful or ugly; seemed lonely. Had never been beyond the areas owned by the Murongs and the Wangs because her mother did not allow her to; had never met any 'outsiders' even when she went over to the Murongs' Double-Storeyed Water Pavilion of Bestowals to read. Shed tears after Duan Yu asked if Murong Fu had ever called her 'beautiful' (Chapter 12).
Disliked martial arts, but read and memorised martial arts manuals so that she see Murong Fu as often as possible, and explain the techniques to him when he needed help. In the 2nd edition, Wang was quoted as saying that she 'hated' martial arts; in the 3rd edition, she used the word 'hate' only after Duan Yu used it to describe his own feelings towards the same. Did not learn any of the martial arts techniques that she had read in books; felt that women would not look cultured or refined if they practised martial arts. Would rather raise pet chicks, play the zither and do calligraphy instead of memorising martial arts books if not for her affections towards Murong Fu (Chapter 12)
Had a considerably amount of confidence in her knowledge of martial arts, despite not knowing how to use them (3rd edition only; not mentioned in the 2nd edition). Left the Highland Manor of Camellias for the outside world for the first time in her life with A'Bi, A'Zhu and Duan Yu (Chapter 12).
Wang Yuyan's knowledge about martial arts prompted Sima Lin to remark that the reputation of the Murong Family (Wang was a maternal niece of the Murongs) as the possessor of peerless depth and breadth in the pugilistic field was not undeserved (Chapter 13).
Almost killed by Zhu Baokun when she identified his Heart-Restoring Needle of the Lord of Heaven that he sought to hide from Sima Lin; commented that it was pointless to have her killed anyway (Chapter 13).
