Mu Wanqing

In Chinese: 木婉清.

Lived in a large house about 6 to 7 li (3.0 to 3.5 km) to the north of the Valley of Ten Thousand Calamities; had a profusion of roses planted along the cobblestone path that took visitors through the front courtyard all the way to the main hall. Lent Duan Yu the horse because Zhong Ling was her good friend. Had a slim figure and long shiny black hair that was styled in the manner of unmarried women. Spoke with a crisp and clear voice that did not have any warmth in it. Duan Yu felt indescribably uneasy listening to the voice because it sounded totally uncaring and terribly hostile (Chapter 3, unnamed).

Had escaped from Jiangnan and travelled all the way to Dali prior to Duan Yu's borrowing of Black Rose. Had a fragrance about her that smelt similar to orchids and musk; although delicate, the fragrance could be detected about two chi (66.67 centimetres) away from her. Called 'rude and unreasonable' by Duan Yu after she had him slapped, thrown off her horse and dragged along the ground. Wore a black veil over her face, revealing only a pair of very dark eyes that shone with radiance (Chapter 3, unnamed).

Named after she and Duan Yu rescued Zhong Ling from the Society of Divine Farmers. Known to Zhong Ling as a woman of her words; she would carry out whatever she said that she would do (Chapter 3).

Had skin as translucent as jade and as white as snow, a sharp chin, a cherry-like mouth with thin lips, and two rows of teeth so fine that they looked like bits of jade. Had worn her veil for such a long time that she had never heard anyone comment about her beauty, for those she met could only comment on her good martial arts skills; felt happy to hear Duan Yu's praise about her beauty. Could not help but feel touched when Duan Yu attempted to protected her from Yue the Third. Had sworn before her teacher (who was known as the Guest of the Secluded Valley) years ago to wear a veil throughout the year, so that the teacher could impart martial arts skills to her. Anyone who saw her face had to be killed, or become her husband. When her veil was removed, she looked as beautiful as a new moon and a flowering tree in the snow (Chapter 4).

An orphan who had been abandoned in the wilderness as an infant; taken in and brought up by her martial arts teacher. At the age of 14, she began wearing the veil. Now aged 18. Swore the oath to kill or marry the man who saw her face recently when she and her teacher left to kill the two women that Gan Baobao told them about. If she did not honour the oath, her teacher would commit suicide as soon as she got wind of it (Chapter 4).

The first woman whom Duan Yu kissed on the lips (Chapter 4). Yun Zhonghe found Mu very attractive, but not coquettish enough to be considered a perfect beauty. Almost had her eyes gouged out by Zuo Zimu on the orders of Ye the Second (Chapter 5).

Appeared beautiful to Zhu Danchen. Considered herself a woman from the wild mountains who had not had any education in the literature of that era; understood only half of what Zhu said to her. Became angry when she saw how affectionate Duan Yu and the Sage of the Hollow Jade were with each other, prior to finding out who the Sage actually was. Considered by the Sage to bear a three-tenths resemblence to Qin Hongmian. Did not know the names of her biological father and mother. Did not care if anyone in Duan Yu's family liked her, so long as he did. Generally fearless, but the impending audience with the Emperor of Dali gave her goosebumps. Described by the Emperor Baoding as innocent, sincere and simple (Chapter 6).

Considered by Duan Zhengchun as having the facial features and temper of her mother. Initially thought that Duan was her grandteacher because he had taught her martial arts teacher, the Guest of the Secluded Valley, the Palm of the Five Nets Upon the Wispy Smoke (Chapter 7).

Born in the 9th lunar month. Did not know the surname and given name of her martial arts teacher, who later turned out to be named Qin Hongmian. Wished to marry Duan Yu with Duan Zhengchun's blessings; refused by the older Duan because he was Mu's biological father. Duan Yu was her half-brother and Qin Hongmian was actually her biological mother (Chapter 7).

Imprisoned by the Stranger in Black in the stone hut at the Valley of Ten Thousand Calamities and ingested the Powder for the Harmonious Union of the Yin and the Yang when she unwittingly ate some food that was laced with it (Chapter 7). Rescued by Hua Hegen through a tunnel under the hut. Recovered from the effects of the Powder for the Harmonious Union of the Yin and the Yang by taking some laxatives and drinking large amounts of cold water (Chapter 9).
